KATRINAS Y KALAKAS

31.10.2023 - 25.11.2023

Gärna Art Gallery is pleased to present “Katrinas y Kalakas”, the first “Día de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead) exhibition, on view from October 31 to November 30, 2023.

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a joyous remembrance of the lives of family members and loved ones who have passed and a celebration of the cycle of life. The holiday is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd throughout Latin America, but it is more closely associated with Mexico, where it originated.

Traditionally, it is said, the souls of the dead return to visit the living for a few brief hours during the celebrations.

In Mexico, cemeteries are cleaned and decorated, special food and candies are cooked, and home altars are designed with offerings (ofrendas) to the dead of the things they enjoyed most in life, including food, drink and even music.

This contemporary twist on tradition underscores the enduring connection between the living and the dearly departed, underscoring the importance of celebrating life´s simple joys and treasuring the fond memories of those who have moved on.

«Various artists bring their unique perspectives to interpreting the theme, drawing inspiration from their Mexican heritage and personal memories associated with El Día de los Muertos. Meanwhile, others approach the theme from a free perspective, based on their imagination and creative background.

The selection of artists include: Andrea Villalón, Lusesita, Sergio Mora, Rafael Silveira, Miguel B., Ramiro Lorenzo, Florent Stosskopf, Bea Perez.
The tequila brand Jose Cuervo will be responsible for enhancing the evening with a carefully selected range of high-quality tequilas.
